Used in french post offices to sort the mail. Each pigeon hole corresponding to an area or town.
These were made by french brand Tolix from the end of the First World War. They are also called “meuble de tri postal”.
The steel has been protected with a gunmetal paste. This protects the rusted patina while preventing further rusting. It also gives an industrial gunmetal finish.
