This is an antique butter dish or butter bell with a clever cooling system.
The bell is Hollow with two holes at the top to fill it with fresh water. The water cools the clay which then keeps the butter cool.
An ancestor of the fridge of sorts.
The water can be poured out of the holes and changed
It is in excellent vintage condition with a small chip on the dish part. See pictures. There are some line scale stains from where the water sad inside the bell. Ir came from Burge d’y where the water is naturally very hard.
